Today, and every day we remember the events of 9/1 Today, and every day we remember the events of 9/11. We remember the parents who unknowingly said goodbye to their families and went into work for the final time. We remember the innocent people who boarded a plane not knowing they would never come home. We remember the firefighters and other first responders who marched up countless flights of stairs knowing they may never never come back down. We remember those who battled, and continued to battle illnesses related to the events of that day. We remember the families who continue to bear the loss of their loved ones. We will #NEVERFORGET September 11, 2001. #PGFDvolunteers #PGFDmd #gonebutneverforgotten #volunteerfirstresponders

Closing out 2026 National Volunteer Week today wit Closing out 2026 National Volunteer Week today with celebrating, Volunteer Firefighter Maya Hicks. Maya is currently serving with the Glenn Dale Volunteer Fire Association. She is the first person in her family to join the fire service and was inspired to volunteer to begin her own tradition and legacy. Volunteer Firefighter Hicks says her experience with Company 18 has made her a more confident, resilient, and empathic person, stating, "It's made me more appreciative of life and more connected to my community. Seeing people at their most vulnerable gives me a broader perspective and a stronger desire to help where I can." Maya says the knowledge she has gained from her mentors has been the highlight of her volunteer experience and hopes to start a career in the fire service in the future. Maya says balancing personal responsibilities, several jobs, and volunteering, "can be challenging with managing my schedule, but I make it work the best I can, and adapt along the way."
