Closing out 2026 National Volunteer Week today wit Closing out 2026 National Volunteer Week today with celebrating, Volunteer Firefighter Maya Hicks.

Maya is currently serving with the Glenn Dale Volunteer Fire Association. She is the first person in her family to join the fire service and was inspired to volunteer to begin her own tradition and legacy.

Volunteer Firefighter Hicks says her experience with Company 18 has made her a more confident, resilient, and empathic person, stating, "It's made me more appreciative of life and more connected to my community. Seeing people at their most vulnerable gives me a broader perspective and a stronger desire to help where I can."

Maya says the knowledge she has gained from her mentors has been the highlight of her volunteer experience and hopes to start a career in the fire service in the future. Maya says balancing personal responsibilities, several jobs, and volunteering, "can be challenging with managing my schedule, but I make it work the best I can, and adapt along the way."

Today, the PGFD celebrates, 17 year veteran Volunt Today, the PGFD celebrates, 17 year veteran Volunteer Captain Brian Moreland of Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad
@bladensburg_fire_department

Brian knew he wanted to be a firefighter at age 5. “I grew up respecting the fire service and the people who answered the call when others needed help most. I wanted to be someone people could count on during their worst moments. This is an opportunity for me to serve my community and be part of something bigger than myself.”

Brian says his experience volunteering has helped shape him as a person, stating, “It has taught me discipline, leadership, humility, and the importance of teamwork,” and that being an officer at Company 9 has “also strengthened my passion for organizational leadership and departmental training.”

For Volunteer Captain Moreland, the highlight of his volunteer experience “has been the relationships built over the years, the lessons passed down to me from great mentors, and the opportunity to mentor younger members coming into the fire service. Being able to help others grow through training, leadership, and real-world experience is something I take a lot of pride in.”

In addition to serving as a volunteer, Brian is a career firefighter with the @nih_firefighters National Institutes of Health Fire Department and an instructor with the @mfri_umd Maryland Fire Rescue Institute. He adds, “Balancing career, volunteering, training responsibilities, and family life can definitely be challenging, but it comes down to priorities, discipline, and having a strong support system. It takes commitment, but serving others and helping develop the next generation of firefighters has always been worth it to me.”

Today we celebrate, Volunteer Firefighter Lisa Ray Today we celebrate, Volunteer Firefighter Lisa Ray. In 2017, she happened to notice a "Volunteers Wanted" sign outside of PGFD Station 835/Greenbelt and says, "that walking into that firehouse was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made."

She began serving with the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. on the Emergency Medical Service side of operations, but quickly got involved in fire suppression. Volunteer Firefighter Ray feels like the fire service has strengthened her personality and value system, noting "integrity, a passion for learning, and the importance of being a good teammate and an effective leader. It’s given me opportunities to develop problem-solving skills and reinforced how important it is to stay connected to the community we serve." She has also gained a deeper appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a department running, emphasizing the importance of fundraising, community events, and the policies that support operations.

Lisa says the highlight of her fire service experience has been becoming a state-certified fire instructor and is most rewarded by seeing people discover what they’re capable of when they put in the work, physically and mentally. With a full-time job as an Instructor with the Maryland Fire Rescue Institute, Ray says that "volunteering with the fire department is something I make a priority in my schedule. It can be demanding, between classes, staffing apparatus, meetings, trainings, and everything in between, but for me, it’s worth it. The camaraderie, the sense of purpose and pride, and the feeling of being part of something larger than yourself are incredibly rewarding. Most importantly, it provides the opportunity to have a positive impact on someone’s worst day, and that’s what makes it all meaningful."

The week of April 19th through the 25th is Nationa The week of April 19th through the 25th is National Volunteer Week. The PGFD is proud of the fire, rescue, and EMS service provided by our volunteer members across the county.

Today we celebrate, Tre'Von Broome. When his goddaughter told him that she wanted to be a firefighter when she grew up, he wanted to set an example for her and joined the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department. Now, with four years of service, Volunteer Firefighter Broome says, "The experience has matured me, made me a better man. I feel like I have stepped into a leadership role." He said that some of the highlights of his time at Company 27 include completing driver training on the fire wagon and the rescue squad. Tre'Von added, "Less than 30 minutes after being turned over to drive the wagon, we were dispatched for a fire call. My training was immediately put to use." Volunteer Firefighter Broome finds balancing family, his job with a private ambulance company, and volunteering enjoyable, "I've always been good at compartmentalization and managing my time. Plus, I love a good challenge!"

Today, the PGFD is proud to highlight the service of Volunteer Firefighter Joey Allen. Joey has been a firefighter with the Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad Inc. for almost three years. He was inspired to become a volunteer firefighter by family tradition, most especially by his father. For four generations, the Allens have served as firefighters, both volunteer and career. Joey says his experience serving with Berwyn Heights "has taught me to expect the unexpected. Volunteering in a densely populated urban environment presents itself with new challenges every day; there is always something to learn." The highlight of Joey states, "The highlight of my volunteer experience at Berwyn Heights is the family environment that Company 14 offers. Since being a part of the Live-in Program, I have formed lifelong bonds with some exceptionally great firefighters."
